GAA Round-Up

St Augustine's GAA

Strong Inter -County Representation.

The Friary had four past pupils on the Waterford team which beat Galway last Sunday in the National Hurling League. Seamus Prendergast, Michael Brick Walsh, Shane Fives and debutant Tadgh Burke all contributed to a great win. Another past pupil, Richie Foley is on the injury list and we wish him a speedy recovery.

On the football front the team that faced Antrim last weekend included another five past Friary students in Stephen Enright, Shane Briggs, Conor Phelan, Tommy Prendergast and Paul Whyte.

This is a superb representation for the Friary and it highlights the rich GAA culture which exists in the school.

FRIARY GO DOWN FIGHTING

THURLES CBS 0 -19      ST. AUGUSTINE’S 2 – 11

St. Augustine’s may have surrendered their Munster and All-Ireland titles at Kilsheelin on Wednesday last but not before they put up an almighty fight.  The noted Tipperary hurling nursery had seen their Harty Cup campaign end at the quarter final stage and having turned their attention to the big ball, they proved to be a fine footballing side.  The first half proved a chastening experience for this youthful Augustine’s combination, (11 of the starting 15 are available again next year), as they were completely overwhelmed.  The Tipp boys may have lacked some finesse but they more than made up for it with sheer power.  They dominated all sectors of the field in that opening twenty minutes, by which time they were an incredible 10 points to the good and an embarrassing hammering looked very much on the cards.  Somehow the young Dungarvan boys managed to drag themselves back into the game.  Experienced players like Jack Mullaney and Ross Browne began to win worthwhile possession.  David Looby pointed a free, Mullaney followed with a fine score from play and three minutes before the break Nire youngster Dylan Guiry pounced on a goal-keeping error to punch to the net.  A half-time deficit of six points could have been an awful lot worse, but matters were not helped when influential wing-back Ciarán O’Neill was forced off with a leg injury.

Cross Country at W.I.T

The East Munster Schools Cross Country Championshipstook place at W.I.T. Sports Grounds, Carriganore, Waterford on Thursday 30th January, 2014.

The Friary was represented by six teams (3 girls and 3 boys). The course was well laid out and easy to follow, thanks to Tom O’Brien (W.I.T.) and his assistants.   The officials, organized by Mary Ashe were very efficient, which helped to run the Cross Country very smoothly, many thanks to all from St. Augustine’s College.

The highlight of the day for the Friary was the brilliant performance of Emma Hallahan (West Waterford A/C), winning the Junior Girls 2000m.   Unfortunately most of the Junior team were missing through illness.   St. Augustine’s Junior Boys’ team and Inter Girls’ team won silver and four of the teams qualified for Munster. Many thanks to team coach Bro Patrick Lennon OSA who accompanied the students on the day.
