A Taste of Japan

Transition Year students enjoyed an introduction to Japanese culture on Thursday, May 12th. Ms Michelle Healy who spent time teaching English in Japan gave the students a very interesting workshop, with the students actively participating.

TY activities- Wednesday, May 4th

This week may be a short one for the TY Students but it's still busy.

  • On Wednesday The Sky Sports students will visit the local primary school to help out with games.
  • Thursday the students have their GAA coaching module.
  • TY 1 students have their Yoga Module on Thursday.
  • Students will also collecting for the Irish Heart Foundation at Twomey's Spar on Thursday.
  • TY students have been very helpful in preparation for the Pieta House “darkness to into Light” fundraiser. Well done!

Junior Achievement Success Skills.


Mr Pat Devereux gave a very informed presentation to TY3 students on the key to the successful interview. The areas he discussed were effective communication and developing CVs.

Sky Dome Planetarium

Oliver Haughley of Sky Dome Planetarium pictured with TY students; Collins Fogherty, Jasmin Byrne, Ciarián Ó Mathúna,Annie Dalton and TY Co-ordinator Ms Nollaig Sheehan. Sky Dome Academy operates a Mobile Planetarium throughout Ireland which gives adults and children a chance to interact with the planets, stars, galaxies and other objects in our universe. All our TY students got the opportunity to See the Stars!

TY activities week beginning Monday, April 4th

  • Monday, Leisure Module including Pitch & Putt, Beauty Module, Fitness Camp & gym session at Clonea Leisure Centre.
  • Sky Dome Module on Tuesday as well as Toastmasters Public Speaking Module
  • Wednesday: TY 3 & 4 will be taking part in the Junior Achievement Module with Pat Devereux.
  • Thursday: TY 1 have their Yoga Module.

  • Monday: Pitch and Putt and Interview Skills Module.
  • Tuesday: 7pm Toastmasters Public Speaking Event Night. All are welcome.
  • Wednesday: Sky Sports students visit the local primary school. Japanese Cultural Module
  • Thursday: GAA coaching module. Japanese Cultural Module
  • A very special thanks also goes out to the TY students who helped out with the Pieta Darkness to Light Walk on Saturday morning.

TY Work Experience Schedule 2016/17

Transition Year 2016/17 Work Experience Placement Dates

Students attend Work Placement on Fridays

Placement 1: September 2nd - November 11th

Placement 2: November 18th- February 10th

Placement 3: February 17th- May 19th

TY Activities April 25th

Though the break for the summer holidays is not too far away, Transition Year students are still busy with classroom and other activities. Their trip to Baltinglass Outdoor and Adventure Centre was a great success. Many thanks to the teachers who accompanied the students namely, Ms Lisa Hanrick, Ms Joanann Kelleher, Mr Paul Whyte and Mr Brian Phelan

Leisure Module activities this week include;

  • Clonea Leisure Centre, Pitch & Putt, Fitness Camp and Interview skills.
  • Tuesday is the last day of the Youth Leadership Toastmasters Public Speaking Module.
  • On Thursday the students have their GAA coaching module & TY 1 have Yoga.
  • Many of the TY'S are busy helping with the Pieta Darkness to Light Walk.

Transition Years visit Poland


A group of Transition Year students enjoyed a school excursion to Poland over the Easter Break. Despite the very cold weather the group enjoyed the sites of the medieval city of Kraków, explored the Wieliczka Salt Mine and toured Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum. Príomhoide Ailbhe Ní Neachtain and Ms Shiovaun O’Sullivan accompanied TY Co-Ordinator Ms Nollaig Sheehan and the students on the trip.

Go Dungarvan – Smarter Travel

Go Dungarvan

Hans van de Ven of Go Dungarvan, Smarter Travel met with Transition Year students in the computer lab on March 1st, where the students mapped their home location and calculated the distance to school and the time it takes to travel to The Friary depending on their mode of transport. Many thanks to Hans for taking time to visit St Augustine’s & Ms Joan Anne Kelleher who organised the visit.
